The Saxons are coming!

Here come the Saxons

Here come the Saxons

I never thought I’d ever collect a Dark Ages army and look what has happened.  Here is the first of my Saxon Sea Raider Army, minus buckler and spears.  I have been reading the Age of Arthur Warhammer Ancient Battles book and also Shieldwall.  I really like to look of the Saxon armies in both early and later periods.  Hopefully I will be able to build up enough troops to play them in both periods.  There are some major differences between both periods, but I with some smart use of miniatures I’m sure I do it.

The challenge with painting Saxons, as with all non-uniform armies is coming up with different colour schemes and also shield designs.  This takes longer than painting someone like the Romans (See earlier post) and can look really mish-mash, so I’m going to try and find a unifying feature to the Units.

I really like the early Saxon armies as you can use Late Roman miniature in the make-up of each Unit.  Gripping Beast do some excellent miniatures that I want to get.  Later Saxon armies are very Norse in appearance so it also gives me the chance to sample some of the new plastics the Wargames Factory will soon be releasing.

Anyway, I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

Looking good. What point sized army are you painting up?

Don’t know. What I’m just collecting miniatures that I like and painting. When I have enough I’ll try to make up Units. What are you aiming at?

1500pts. About 400pts worth are character abilities. My planned army is
        General & Army Standard.
        12 x Heavy Cav
        24 x Infantry
        24 x Infantry
        15 x Light Infantry/Bowmen
        24 x Levy types
I want to keep small 24 man units so the army is a bit more manoeuvrable.

Looking good, Sculls!! Bring em on. I’ll get back into the “Dark Ages” as soon as I finish the WW1 German squad but at present I have enough Caledonians/Scots to get by.

On a different note Beccas and myself tried the IABSM WW2 rules for 15mm………..I’m quite impressed.
